1. The ABC’s of Teaching with Calculators
Here a few tips that have helped guide my calculator-teaching practice over the years:
A: Always use technology to enhance, not merely impress.
B: Be sure to check out other options for doing the same thing. I learned to stay on the Home Screen whenever possible. The fewer the screen changes, the less chance of students getting lost along the way.
C: Collaborative learning really does work.
D: Do graphically with the calculator, and confirm algebraically/symbolically. Do with algebra, confirm graphically with the calculator.
E: Each student needs to press his/her keys. Even though it might take longer, talk struggling students through the process while they press the keys themselves. Resist the temptation to take the calculator and do it for them.
- Now that I’ve started the calculator alphabet, any ideas for F-Z?
